We are experts at bike wheel building and maintenance. Whether you are rolling on a 26" road bike or a 20" BMX we can keep your wheels rolling firm and true.
Size aside wheels might all look the same but there are many different factors in how your wheels hold together including the rims, the hubs, and of course the spokes that join the two together. The most common type of wheel build is a three cross spoke pattern. This is where the outside spoke crosses over two other spokes before going under a third and into the rim. This build is used mostly on BMX wheels with a rim of 36 holes or less. Mountain bikes and some road bikes will also often have a three cross back wheel.
Other popular types of lacing patterns include a four cross, which can be found on BMX wheels with 48 hole rims, and radial lacing. Radial lacing is where the spokes travel in a straight line from the hub to the rim and is popular on front wheels of road bikes and on BMX bikes used for flatland. This lacing makes the wheel spin faster, but is not as strong as a cross build.
If your wheels are buckled then chances are they can still be saved, as long as the buckling is not too severe. This is why it is important to keep your spokes tight to ensure the rim does not become too bent out of shape. Sometimes wheels cannot be saved and these should be replaced or rebuilt with a new rim.
We offer wheel maintenance as part of a bike service, simple truing as required, or as a build-from-scratch service. Wheel truing prices start from only £5, and bike servicing and wheel building prices start from just £15. All work can generally be complete within two or three days, unless we specially need to order parts for the job.
